I quit smoking. Yesterday. Yesterday, being November 7th, 2006 at around 2:35 PM EST.
Let's go through the awesome things I've gone through in the last twnty four hours or so.
20 Minutes after last cigarette:
I want another smoke. Oh no, I'm out. We can go get another pack?
Nah, let's see how it goes. Besides I have these white pills that claim that they curb cravings. Maybe they're placebo.
We quit smoking today!
One hour after last cigarette
Small craving. No big deal. Took a nap without smoking.
Five hours after last cigarette
Want a cigarette. At this point, I've told everyone that I quit. Nobody believed me and a lot of people humored me.
Really want a cigarette. CHew the very minty nicotine free gum.
And take a pill.
Camel calls. Food.. drinks.. at the Trop before work.
Two drinks of beer.. going crazy. Camel lights up.. smokes .. smells great want one.. don't ask for one.
Eight hours after last cigarette
Just starting work. Eating a shitload. Can already smell things better. Drinking lots of water. Tightness of chest starts around 10th hour...
Slight coughing at 12th hour.
Fatigue hits around the 15th or 16th hour.
16th hour, driving home
Trying not to pass out on the road. Craving cigarette.. associated with driving.
Lightheaded, headache.. just want to pass out. forget about smoking.
17th hour since last smoke
Passed out.
22nd hour
Woke up.. very irritable.. took some gum.. OH MY GOD FLAVOR. There's never been that much flavor in my mouth before. Good lord. Coughing severly.. need cough syrup.
Take multi-vitamin, and placebo pill.
..... 24th hour.. in another world
scratchy throat.. tightness in chest iks gone.. cravings manageable.
passing out
Now: 7:40 PM.. One day and five hours since last smoke.
Writing this. Miserable. Emotional.
I hate every motherfuckin last one of you.
The first week is the toughest. You're still physiologically addicted. It's not pleasant. The coughing will get worse and cough syrup won't do much for it. You'll start getting withdrawal headaches. Other things. But throat lozenges will work better, tylenol/aspirin/whatever and lots of water will help the headaches. Getting enough sleep - which you don't tend to do - will also be a big help, as will getting some exercise. Most importantly, the urge to eat constantly - nicotine is a powerful appetite suppressant - must be combated, but that can be done with things like gum etc.
After about 7 days the physical symptoms go away and it's all in your head.
It's worth it. Wish I could do it (again). Keep at it.

Posted by: fizzlebottom at November 13, 2006 02:47 AMOh right.. the title was a Star Trek reference..
but FYI, Dawson's Creek used the same title for their second to the last episode ever.
Guess what the last episode was titled?
Posted by: sagien at November 13, 2006 03:59 AMw00t good job on quitting smokin dude!
Posted by: Namflow at November 20, 2006 06:04 AMNow you need to get something for your hand and oral fixation... I used flavored toothpicks cuz i used to chainsmoke while playing med and would reach for a smoke even a year after but toothpicks would be there instead!
Posted by: Afinity at November 28, 2006 04:54 AMI actually suffer very few cravings.
Whatever ones I get are fleeting and easily dismissed.
Except last night. I dreamt that I had a smoke.
Posted by: sagien at November 28, 2006 07:56 AMWhy quit? I think you should smoke. Have you ever tried a cigarette after washing your face and hair with gasoline? Try it! It makes you cooler than ripping on people you don't even know.
I mean if you are flamer (as I suspect you are) why not REALLY be a flamer.
I look forward to your next post. I hope it's smoking hot.
